Tourist attractiveness of Mykolayiv

The Church of St. Nicholas

The church of our city patron, St. Nicolas, was opened and sanctified on October 1, 2004. Architect A. V. Domaratskiy and Mykolayiv artist Victor Semernev with daughter Larisa had painted the church inside.

On the canvases, painted with oil with wax additives, you can see four evangelicals and six saints. On the central painting named “Gladden you” you can see Mother of God with Christ surrounded with angels. The image of St. Nicolas you can see over the church entry.

The authorship of mosaic on portals, stained-glass windows, windows and fences belongs to the artist V.V. Shchedrov.

The Father of Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Bless Metropolitan of Kiev and all Ukraine Volodymir, and also His Eminence Pavel, archbishop Vyshgorod, vicar of Svyatouspensk Kiev lavra of the Caves honoured the church.

Naval Boulevard

In 1826 in Naberezhnaya Street it was opened Naval Boulevard. After Great Patriotic War in connection with 100th anniversary of Admiral S. I. Makarov it was renamed into Makarov Boulevard. People of Mykolayiv still call it BAM (Admiral Makarov Boulevard) although in 70s after reconstruction and expension it was given the name Naval.

Boulevard consists of alleys in which there are many white acacias, lime trees, maples, poplars and flowers. It is opened a perfect view to the Ingul River, estuary and Park of Victory. In the Eastern part of the boulevard there is a wide stone stairs leading to the river bank. It is similar to a famous Stairs of Potemkin in Odessa. They bring you to Ingul, to those places where battleship “Potemkin” went once and which was built in Mykolayiv.

There are monuments of Vice-admiral S. I. Makarov and of M. L. Faleyev in the boulevard.

Monument to Admiral Makarov

Mykolayiv dwellers remember and respect their heroic fellow-townsmen Admiral Makarov. The first monument to him was built in 1955 in the city boulevard. The author of sculptor is O.A. Zdyhovs’kyi. And in 1076 near one of the entrances to Naval Boulevard a new monument was set. Its authors are sculptors A.A.Koptev and architect A.L.Sapelkin.

Monument to Sailor Shevchenko

         On August, 26, 1874 the monument to Sailor Ignat Shevchenko was stately opened. It was the first in pre-revolutionary Russia monument to a lower rank.

At night of January, 19-20 in 1855 G. Shevchenko closed with his body lieutenant Birulev and perished from a hostile bullet. After making public the order of Russian troops’ commander-in-chief about the heroic deed of G. Shevchenko from all over the Russia contributions on building of monument to the hero-sailor became to come.

The order to the project of monument was given to sculptor academician M.O. Mikeshin. In order not to be overspend the budget it was found a possibility to build a monument by an economic method. The carver of the Admiralty shipyard Yudin consented to carve out of wood the model of Shevchenko bust being based on the pictures of Mikeshina. According this model in Mykolayiv the bust of the hero from the metal of cannons captured in time of war with Turkey in 1828-1829 was made. The monument was set near naval barracks on the granite pedestal. In 1903 the monument was transported into Sevastopol but not extant.

On June, 5, 1993 Mykolayiv City Soviet of People's Deputies made a decision № 265 about reconstruction of this monument in Mykolayiv. Paragraph 2 of this decision decreed, “To set the reconstructed monument in front of the main facade of “Building College”. On September, 30, 1995 the inauguration of monument took place.

Memorial complex to heroes-paratroopers led by K. Ol’shans’kyi

In honour of the exploit of paratroopers under the command of K.F. Ol'shans’kyi on March, 27, 1974 a memorial complex, which consisted of monument (sculptural group) and military cemetery, was opened. In a sculptural group there are 7 figures: K.F.Ol'shans’kyi, who has a portrait likeness with a hero, three sailors, three field engineers and fisherman, conducted paratroopers. Composition is dynamic, passes the moment of paratroopers fight in port. All composition of heroes is integrated round a battle flag. A sculptural group is set on a low pedestal, the base of which is a stereobate. On the backside of pedestal on a bronze board there is a text. 

The monument is made of granite, bronze, stereobate.

Pedestal: a height is 2,2 m, length is 5,5 m., a width is 3 m.

Sculptural group: a height is 7 m, a width is 2,7 m, length is 5,2 m.

The author of the first monument, opened as early as 1946, was a sculptor A.M. Izmalkov. Authors of new sculptural group Y.P. Pommer and architect A.A. Dushkin took for basis the composition decision of A.M. Izmalkov.

Behind a monument, athwart to him, an eternal fire is located. Beside 56 heroes-paratroopers are buried.

Administrative House of 61 Communards plant

         This House is situated at the end of Admirals’ka Street. The main gates and stone wall which surrounds a factory are built in 1842 by architect Karl Akroyd in order to Commander in Chief  of the Black Sea fleet and ports, military governor of Mykolayiv and Sevastopol M. P. Lazarev. After completion of gate reconstruction in 1978 they purchased a primeval look again. The bas-reliefs of the mythological winged horses with fishtails were renewed on them. Such gates are unique in Ukraine.

         The administrative house of the plant is built in 1951 in style of the Russian classicism, typical for buildings, which surrounded the enterprises in Admirals’ka Street. The spire of house is crowned with a toy-ship in which a message into 2017 had been laid.

Monument to Pushkin

         A monument to Pushkin is situated in the beginning of Pushkins’ka Street near Inguls’kyi Bridge. A poet on a monument is represented sitting on a stone in the minutes of rest. Leaning back with easily settled back head, he as if listens to himself, and, may be, in that instant the new lines of poetries are occurring in his imagination. Pushkin is faced to the river, his look is directed on those, who enters and rides into the city.

The figure of a poet is founded of a bronze and set on a granite stone.  

The author is an artist of Ukraine Y.A. Makushin. 

The monument is opened in 1987.

Monument to M.L.Faleyev

Michael Leontjevych Faleyev was a co-worker of G.O. Potyomkin. By order of a prince at the end of 1788 M. Faleyev began to build a new shipyard and a city at it in the mouth of Ingul river. He paid especially big attention to building of frigate “Sainted Nicolas”. During four years of his activity a shipyard, harbour and whole city appeared at the empty place, and for that Faleyev got the rank of brigadier, and later of general.

The monument to M. Faleyev was opened on September, 7, 2002, at the day of celebration of 213th anniversary Mykolayiv city, in Naval boulevard.  Authors of monument are famous sculptors – father and son Makushiny. And the regional management of bank branch “Aval” presented a city Faleyev made of bronze (chief of the bank branch P. Prytkyi). 

A monument was sanctified by His Eminence Pitirim. Inscription on a monument says: “Faleyev Michael Leont'evich - a builder of Ingul'skyi shipyards and Mykolayiv city”.

Mykolayiv Zoo

Mykolayiv zoo, one of the oldest zoos of Ukraine, was founded in 1901 by the chairman of city council Mykolay Pavlovych Leontovych. The basis of zoo was his collection of fishes, reptiles, exotic birds, mammals. 

Today it is one of the most comfortable places of the city. To its new territory the zoo moved in 1976.

Animals’ collection of the zoo counts 2500 species, over 360 types of animals, 107 of which are brought into the Red book, including 20 kinds – into Red Book of Ukraine. On the territory of the zoo over 80 types of trees and bushes grow and make happy the eyes of visitors; much of them are specially imported from the botanical gardens of Ukraine and Russia.

The zoo is a favourite resting-place of inhabitants and guests of city. It is legally possible to name zoo-arboretum.

In front of the entrance of the zoo there is a remarkable sculpture - Maugli and his true friend panther Bagira, which hurry swiftly (sculptors are Yuriy Andriyovych and Irina Victorivna Makushiny). 

This visiting card of the zoo became its emblem, the symbol of man and wild nature unity.

Planet of children

It is a unique hall of amusements and playing machines for active children's and family rest. It is situated on the second floor of mega market “Southern Bug” and occupies the area of 4000 sq. km. It works daily, without a weekend, from 11.00 to 20.00. 

Purchasing an entrance ticket, a child can: 

- to overlook children's program in the cinema hall; 

- to play table tennis, football on the mini-field, to jump on a trampoline.

While a child studies the labyrinths of children's amusements, parents can have a drink of coffee or tea, to revise periodicals etc. 

The cafe gives a possibility to organize the anniversary meetings, corporate evening-parties, discos. And a birthday in “Planet of children” is a gift about which a child will remember throughout the year! It contains festive cake with firework, competitions and disco.

Chess club

Beautiful chess palace is remarkable outstanding sight of Mykolayiv, decoration of Naval Boulevard. At the end of 1988 in Naval Boulevard an old, ramshackle house was freed, where the city department of link took place before. 

Architect Sergiy Tarasov, main builder Mykola Shelest, his son and main assistant Sergiy Shelest – due to these people a regional chess club was opened in 1999.

Beautiful cozy house, located above a place, where waters of Ingul and Southern Bug rivers meet, has: 

-      the main pink hall for large actions; 

-     three small halls (green, yellow and granite) which are mainly used for study of young chess-players. 

A club from the first days of its work became the most popular center of chess game and a place of cultural communication of townspeople.

Monument to 61 communards 

In August, 1919 soviet Mykolayiv was taken by Denikin’s Army. They assign the terror and violence policy. At night on November, 20 Denikin’s Army killed 40 dockers and brought to be shot 61 workers of shipbuilding plant “Russud”. Only few of them escaped the death.  

After civil war an area in front of the factory got the name Communards square, factory – the name 61 communards factory. In 1936 in the square a monument was built. Until nowadays we can read on it: “To the immortal fighters for power of Soviets”.

In the years of Hitler occupation fascists destroyed a monument. But in post-war years it was reconstructed. His author – national artist of the USSR, sculptor M.G. Lysenko took part in reconstruction.

Museum of 61 Communards plant

This museum is the oldest in Mykolayiv: in 2008 it was 45 years of age. In 1970 museum got high and honoured rank of “national” one. It is located in the house which is the monument of history itself (built in 1835 through the instrumentality of Admiral M. Lazarev for storage of ships models which were erected at the shipyards of Admiralty). Today the amount of exhibits, saved in this museum, exceeds the funds of all other museums of shipbuilding factories. The number of exhibits, located in five halls and in depository, is 3850.

Museum of shipbuilding and fleet

Museum is created in 1978 and it is the unique such museum in Ukraine. An age-old house, which museum is located in, is a sight of history and architecture of the end of XVIII – the first half of XIX century. Built in style of the early Russian classicism, he served as an office and an apartment of the main commanders of the Black Sea fleet during 1794-1900. 

In due time Admiral M.S.Mordvinov,   I.I. de Traverse, O.S. Hreyg, M.P. Lazarev, G.I. Butakov, M. A. Arkas lived and worked here.

The exposition of museum is located in twelve halls and has about three thousand museum objects. 

In 1981 the group of creators of museum got governmental reward - the State T.G. Shevchenko award of Ukraine. 

Today museum of shipbuilding and fleet is one of the biggest history-cultural centers of city.

61 Communards shipbuilding plant

It is founded in 1788. The main purpose of factory is military and civil shipbuilding. The basis of the first 50 nuclear ship "Sainted Nickolas” was built on January, 5, 1790. In 1827 the first at the Black seaside passenger steamship "Odessa" is built. In 1835 it is launched 88 nuclear ship "Silistriya", in 1941 – 120 nuclear battleship "Twelve apostles", in 1853 - a corvette "Empress Maria", in 1900 - "Prince Potemkin-Tavricheskiy".

From sixtieth a factory builds refrigerated cargo carrier for shipping. 25 ships are sent on an export. Since 1991 plant cooperates with the Greek company "Laskaridis Shipping Company Ltd", Co. Ukrainian-Greek Ltd. "Yngref-transftot", Norwegian company "DOF Indistri AS", French company "Vopak LMF", state company "Delta-pilot", Dutch company DMT.

During the time of its existence a factory had built about 2000 military and civil courts of different class and various purposes.   

Mykolayiv Vereshchagin Art Museum.

It is one of the oldest museums in Ukraine. It is founded in 1914 as a monument to the prominent Russian painter of battle scenes V.V. Vereshchagin. The initiator of creation was an artist M.Gedroyc. The first collection, which took place in the former house of guardhouse of military department, included works passed by Academy of arts and Russian museum, and also personal things sent by the widow of V.V. Vereshchagin. After revolution collection was filled up from the national personal collections.

In the years of occupation of fascist invaders a museum was ransacked. After war it again started its work in a little age-old estate. And in 1986 museum moved onto Velyka Mors’ka Street (Large Marine Street), 47, in one of the best houses of the city, monument of architecture of the second half of XIX century. The thematic sections of museum’s exhibition halls exhibit an icon painting, sculptures, graphic arts and if to speak about collection of V. Vereshchagin pictures – one of the best in the world.

Local history museum

In December, 1913 Mykolayiv city museum of history and nature was opened. It was located in the private house of Zasel's’kyi, which stood on crossing of Velyka (Large) and Mala (Small) Mors’ka (Marine) Streets. The basis of collection was formed from collection of E.P. Frantsev, who had been collected the objects of zoology, botany, mineralogy more than 40 years. After his death his  heirs passed whole museum for benefit of Mykolayiv absolutely free.

The first chief of museum was S.I. Gayduchenko. The funds of museum were considerably filled up due to Olbio excavations and private collections. In 1920 museum was renamed on museum of history and archeology. From 1920 to 1936 he was located in the house of guardhouse and Admiralty cathedral, then moved into a house in Inzhenerna (Engineer) street, 1. Already before the beginning of Great Patriotic war museum located in Dekabrystiv (Decembrists) street. Exposition had been functioned and in the period of fascists occupation of the city. An underground anti-fascist group was even created here.

Since 1950 museum has a title of regional local history museum. Today its "exhibition supply" consists more than 160 thousand objects.

Russian Arts Drama Theatre

The stage of Russian arts theatre is the oldest in the city. In 1882 petty bourgeois Karl Ivanivych Monte had built his own theatre. At that time the theatre had 350 armchairs of parterre and amphitheatre, 36 lower and dress circle boxes and a gallery. The author of the project and architect is engineer T. K. Brusnyts’kyi. The merchant Y. Y. Shiffer bought the theatre in 1894.

In 1898 it was reconstructed: the hall was increased, the new stage was equipped and a new lobby was built. In 1917 the theatre was nationalized and it became to be listed as “intimate theatre, ex-Shiffer”.

In 1920 theatre got a name of people's education commissar A. Lunacharskyi. During famishment of 1921-1922 equipment and furniture were plundered and only walls survived. The house wanted to be destroyed but didn’t through the funds absence.  In 1926 the theatre was rebuilt and called after Skrypnyk – Ukrainian people’s education commissar. In 1922 the  movable drama team “Shahterka Donbassa” (“Donbass’ miner wife”) was founded in Lugans’k. In autumn 1934 it moved into our city for the constant residence. 

On December,1, 1934 the opening night of the theatre took place – the performance “Optimistychna tragediya” (“Optimistic tragedy”) was shown and from it the glorious history of Russian theatre had been started. In some years the title “Arts theatre of Ukraine” appeared on the playbills and from 1939 till the middle of ninetieth the theatre had a name of pilot V. Chkalov. In 1994 the theatre for the team request got its historical title “Arts” back.

During war years the theatre was evacuated to the Urals region. The building of the theatre was burned but in 1946 it was not only rebuilt but modified: it got new stage with reverse circle, backstage part was re-equipped, the third tier of boxes appeared.

In 2005 Russian theatre was repaired. It was the third phase of rebirth and reconstruction of theatre building.

Ukrainian Academic Theatre of Drama and Musical Comedy

On November, 1, 1927 on the basis of theatrical group “Chervona kravatka” (“Red scarf”) under the Central club of pioneers and pupils, the Theatre of Young Viewer (TYV) was created. The first Chief was V. Kredin. Newly established theatre was situated in K. Marks Street (today – Admirals’ka street).

In the beginning of 30s it moved in Pryvozna Street (today – Dunayeva street) into meant for the theatre building of ex-synagogue. Based as Ukraine language TYV under Organization of political enlightenment it quickly became “too old” for culture-educational group for children and young people. Not only children’s but also performances for adult became to appear on the playbills more and more frequent.

In 1927 in Mykolayiv it was created workers' and peasants' movable Ukrainian theatre. At the instance of the community the theatre got the name of T. G. Shevchenko and in 1959 it was combined with Mykolayiv TYV. So Mykolayiv Musical Drama Theatre appeared.

In January, 1981 it became Ukrainian Drama and Musical Comedy Theatre and in 2001 got the highest award – the title Academic. In 1992 under the theatre it was opened children’s fellow theatre “Academy of Lady Coulisse” which continues to work till our days.
